To cloth or not to cloth...

Despite the controversies around which is better for the environment, after having done a little bit of research, I am reasonably convinced that cloth diapers are the way to go. That said, I think I am a little too squeamish/lazy to commit to cleaning them myself. Ecoholic and green living Toronto recommend the Comfy Cotton diaper service. Friends of ours highly recommended Happy Nappy diaper service. They use microfiber rather than cotton to whisk away moisture. Our friends swear that their little one has never gotten a diaper rash until they were on vacation and switched to disposables. Here is a detailed note from Ruth & Luke about their decision:

Luke did a lot of research on the companies. One of the main reasons that we went with Happy Nappy is that the diapers are not prefolds and since they are not cotton they do not need to be bleached with traditional bleach. (Luke and the guy that runs this division had a long conversation about this, which I was not listening in on...) Happy Nappys come with the snap system, which makes diaper changes a lot easier because then you do not have to worry so much about all the twists and folds that come with Pre-Folds! I know that you get the hang of it...but folding diapers and learning to do so was low on my list for the first few weeks! Also Luke and I liked the fact that when Elijah has a wet diaper, the fabric next to his skin is dry (which is not the case with the traditional pre-fold.) Ohhhhh...and the fact that we can occasionally forget to put out the diapers and still have cloth the next week with out getting dinged! I think that those were the main reasons.........I hope that this helps! And I have about 15 newborn/small covers to lend you! (Some are boring white while others are Bummis coloured ones!)

Both deliver. Both claim to be environmentally conscious. Neither website makes their pricing easy to figure out. I will have to call each and find out more!

  1. We use prefolds (I wash my own) and they've worked great for us!!!! We use a microfiber liner that wicks away the moisture so Jacob's little bum stay nice and dry. the clean diapers also double well as burp clothes or to play peek-a-boo with :)

I know people who have used both services you mentioned above if you want any feed back on them
