Tidying Up

Our living room has been transformed into a play area for Gabe and his friends when Flick is hosting mommy group. All of the toys and books are pretty much scattered everywhere, occasionally finding themselves tidied up and put into a big reusable shopping bag, or piled up on a table. We also have a bookshelf that holds miscellaneous stuff in our living room, but isn't suitable for holding Gabe's things as it's tall and wobbly.

This was the motivation to go to IKEA last weekend and pick up an EXPEDIT shelving unit. We know several families that use these to organize their living room, especially their kids' toys. The shelving unit doesn't come with baskets, and there are several kinds that fit, from rattan to hard plastic to nylon. We opted for some new boxes in the BLADIS series which are made out of woven pandanus leaves and looked sturdy enough to withstand a one-year old.

The store is a pretty fun place for Gabe, even though he's too young to play in the ball room. There's an area full of kids' furniture and toys he got to play in, and the cafeteria has plenty of high chairs where we stopped for lunch.

Back when I moved into my first apartment, I, too, was like the guy in this Fight Club scene. There must be a point in your life where you stop going to get things from IKEA. But Flick and I are not quite there yet.
