Baby Furniture: What to buy? When? Where?

We have received/read some good advice on this topic. 1) Either buy furniture that is super cheap and you will get rid of quickly (i.e. Ikea) OR buy furniture (especially dressers with hutches) that are good quality and will last for years. I am leaning towards the latter. 2) Book advice says don't bother with a convertible crib: these are ones that "convert" from a crib to a toddler bed/day bed to a double bed.... because most people (including us) don't have room for double beds in their kid rooms. But, almost everywhere we have been, including: Dear-Born Baby, BabiesRUs, and Baby Cribs, pretty much only sells convertible cribs. 3) My pal Ali reminded me that short women with larger chests (like me) should look for cribs with lots of adjustable settings to make it easier to get our babies in and out. This seemed like good advice from someone who had to use a step stool to get her son out of his crib! 4) Most cribs are not in stock -- they take 8-20 weeks to be delivered! So buy earlier if you want a nursery set up for when baby arrives. This was news to us as the baby is now 10 weeks away! Still after checking out dozens of options this weekend, E and I returned home empty handed. We think the baby can sleep in his little uppa baby bassinet for the first little bit while we sort the other stuff out!
